Remember Allerton (Mem Dress)

~A 1620 Pilgrim Costume~
When I started looking into sewing pilgrim costumes
for this Thansgiving I found that a pattern
for a real pilgrim costume was not on the market.
So after spending much time researching
I designed a three piece authentic 1620 pilgrim costume.
The first layer of the costume is called a "chemise".
These were used as an under shirt/slip.
These have drawstring adjustable necks and sleeves.
The chemise often had a double purpose
as they were used for nightgowns as well.
To cut down on the cost of these costumes
I used (after washing :)) fabric that has been
in storage for some time now (just on the chemise).
Because of this please be aware that some of these
may have very slight discolorments or markings.
The little girls of 1620 were just as active
(if not more so because of the lack of
"inside entertainment")
as the average little girls of today in 2007.
The clothing that they
wore was not made to constrict them, but to
be modest and appropriate for all activities.
The next layer of the costume is a long full skirt
with an adjustable drawstring waist.
The skirts are full enough for the most active girly
to run jump and play. One of our little models did
however discover that cartwheels may
not be appropriate
unless you add bloomers or leggings. :)
The last part of the costume is the jacket.
These lightweight jackets were worn at all times,
they were never removed to show the chemise
underneath. The jackets open in the
front, but are meant to be
laced up with the provided leather cord.
The ends of the cord can be tucked into the skirt.
~NOTE:
Please understand that the pilgrim girls (and boys)
up to the age of 7 or 8 would have worn a full dress, not
this three piece outfit. We however wanted to provide
this costume in all sizes.
For the younger girls (such as my 2 year old niece) it
may be harder to keep the bodice just right covering the
skirt band, because of their baby body shape. You could
pin the two together or add snaps. In any case their
tummies will always be covered by the chemise.

We hope you enjoy these costumes as much as we have.
They are perfect for Thankgiving celebrations,
historical events, reenactments, and for girls
who want to imagine themselves as little
Remember Allerton or any other girl
who came over on the Mayflower.
